When you’ve got the time, making your own energy bars is a great alternative to store-bought. You have full control over everything that goes into the bar, and can experiment with your own favourite ingredients. Oats, quinoa, nuts, seeds, dates, natural peanut butter and cocoa powder a just a few common ingredients.

Here are a few tips to consider as you start to experiment:

  1. Avoid added or refined sugar. Dates and bananas, for example, are great natural sources of that sweet flavour often associated with store-bought energy bars.

  2. Use whole, natural foods whenever possible. Buy raw, unsalted nuts and natural nut butters. Consider organic grains and seeds whenever possible.

  3. Start with the basics. You can easily make energy bars with as few as four ingredients. Start with foundational ingredients and then add in your favourite flavourings one at a time. Taste as you go along!

  4. Cut your energy bars and then wrap them in plastic wrap. Seal them in an airtight container in the fridge to keep them fresh longer.
